In a poor village in Georgia named Tobacco Road, lives the impoverished Lester family. The head of the household, Jeet (played by Charley Grapewin), is a lazy man who often resorts to unscrupulous means to get what he wants. His wife, Ada (played by Elizabeth Patterson), frequently urges him to work hard on the farm, but to no avail. They also have an unmarried son, Dude (played by William Tracy), and daughter Ellie May (played by Gene Tierney) living at home. One day, Jeet discovers his son-in-law, Lull (played by Ward Bond), has received a large bag of turnips. Without hesitation, he leads his family in stealing Lull's turnips. Then, he hears that the long-lost Tim is about to return to Tobacco Road, which makes him very happy as he hopes to borrow money from Tim to buy farming supplies. However, Ada warns him that stealing will bring God's punishment and that this year's harvest is doomed to be poor. Feeling guilty and uneasy, Jeet decides to ask Sister Bessie, the preacher, to pray for him to cleanse his sins.
