Set against the rugged winter of the Japan Sea, this representative work by Kōichi Saitō vividly portrays the tumultuous hearts of a man and woman who have fled the city. The resonant sounds of the Tsugaru shamisen throughout the film, along with the inserted paintings of a blind woman by Shin'ichi Saitō, enhance the local motifs that uplift the movie. A couple descends at a stop in a desolate fishing village in Tsugaru. Isako, who worked in a bar in Tokyo, returns to her hometown village to follow Tetsuo, who is being pursued due to some trouble. Bored in the empty countryside, Tetsuo becomes acquainted with a blind girl named Yuki. Initially intending to tease her, Tetsuo starts to feel love for Yuki, who admires him. Yuki states that she wants to become a blind minstrel. However, their peaceful days were not to last long... ◆ 1st place in the Kinema Junpo Best Ten
