Paul Armstrong (Sean Connery), a renowned professor at Harvard Law School who hasn't taken a case in years, receives a letter of grievance: a girl in Florida has been kidnapped and murdered, and the police have identified a Black college student, Bobby (Blair Underwood), as the suspect. After capturing him, they torture him to sign a confession, turning this promising young man into a death row inmate simply because of his race. Paul is moved by the letter and decides to return to the legal arena to defend Bobby. After a meticulous investigation, Paul finds evidence that could prove Bobby's innocence, but he doesn't realize that everything has been meticulously planned by Bobby, and that he and his family are the true targets.
