In 1980s England, Edward (played by Bill Milner) is a ten-year-old boy. His mother (played by Anne-Marie Duff) struggles to run the family care home, while his father (played by David Morrissey) is in the midst of a midlife crisis, entangled with a girl who comes to help. Living among the elderly, Edward is curious about what happens when they die, and he seeks evidence of an afterlife by secretly recording the sounds in the room when they pass away. One day, Edward meets the new resident, Clarence (played by Michael Caine). Clarence is a retired magician, sad all the time, and harsh towards Edward. However, a strange friendship forms between the two as they interact...This film was nominated for Best Newcomer by the London Film Critics Circle (Bill Milner).
