Geophysicist Dr. Yusuke Tadokoro (played by Kazuya Kobayashi) leads his team on a deep-sea scientific expedition, only to discover unusual fissures and mud flows on the ocean floor. After a series of investigations, he concludes that the Japanese archipelago will sink in one year. However, Japanese government officials dismiss Dr. Tadokoro's prediction as an unbelievable lie. Only Prime Minister Yamamoto (played by Koji Ishizaka) recognizes the severity of the situation and appoints Tadokoro's ex-wife, Saori Takamori (played by Mao Daichi), as the Minister of Crisis Management to lead Dr. Tadokoro and his team in their efforts to save Japan. Soon, large-scale geological disasters begin to occur across the Japanese islands, starting from Hokkaido, plunging the entire country into panic. The government is powerless against the disaster, and the only existing overseas relocation policy is entirely inadequate to address the rapidly worsening situation. The reality of the complete submersion of the Japanese archipelago is on the verge of unfolding. Ultimately, Dr. Tadokoro and his research team find a way to save Japan, but the practical implementation of this method proves to be fraught with difficulties… This film is adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Japanese science fiction writer Sakyo Komatsu. The film, with a budget of 2 billion yen, is one of the largest investment and promotional disaster films in recent years in Japan.
