In a small German town, the sinister Dr. Caligari (played by Werner Krauss) is finally granted permission to perform his hypnotism act. University students Francis (played by Friedrich Feher) and Alan (played by Hans Heinrich von Twardowski) attend the show. The mad Dr. Caligari demonstrates how he hypnotizes and controls his accomplice Cesare (played by Conrad Veidt), announcing that Cesare can answer any questions from the audience. Curious, Alan asks, "How long will I live?" The morbid Cesare replies, "Until tomorrow morning." Francis does not believe it, but Alan is filled with terror. Soon after, Alan is indeed murdered. Francis informs his close friend Jenny (played by Lil Dagover) and her doctor father. They embark on a sprawling chase, but the astonishing secrets intertwine—who is the real killer? This film is one of the most talked-about works in the history of world cinema and is a milestone of German Expressionist cinema. Its bizarre expressionist style became a predecessor that later Western horror films would emulate. In 1958, this film was ranked 12th out of the "Top 12 Films in World Cinema" by 117 film historians from 26 countries in Brussels, Belgium.
