Craig (played by John Cusack) is a puppeteer skilled at manipulating puppets on stage. Due to life's pressures, he takes a job managing documents at a company in New York. This company is located on the "seven and a half floor" of an office building, and since it only has half a floor, the employees have to work hunched over. Due to this peculiarity, Craig accidentally discovers a door behind a filing cabinet in the office. Driven by curiosity, Craig enters this door. As soon as he steps inside, he gets sucked in and travels through time and space into the brain of the famous actor John Malkovich. He finds that he can now control the gaze of John Malkovich at will and peek into all of John Malkovich's private moments. Fifteen minutes later, Craig is automatically ejected back into reality. This discovery excites Craig immensely, and he decides to make a big business out of this door.
