In a town during the Edo period, a lower-ranked samurai, disgruntled by his superior's broken promise, kills the officer with his sword, causing chaos. Afterward, the middle-aged samurai Nakamura Munesuke (played by Makoto Fujita) becomes the scapegoat, facing demotion and pay cuts. Soon, the young and handsome officer Okuda Ukyoraku (played by Hiroyuki Sanada) takes office. Meanwhile, a gang of down-and-out ronin begins to harass the local populace, resulting in the unfortunate death of an elderly man. Munesuke, who happens to wander into the situation, finds it suspicious and secretly starts an investigation. The old man's daughter, seeking revenge for her father, sells her body to hire a brave warrior to kill the ronin. During this time, Munesuke befriends the ronin Bunshichi (played by Sonny Chiba), and their relationship develops through a series of encounters. Munesuke asks Bunshichi to investigate Ukyoraku's background, uncovering intricate connections between the new officer and the ronin group. The conspiracy gradually comes to light...
