The male protagonist Harada is a divorced playwright, whose parents died in a car accident twenty-eight years ago. One day, Harada encounters the ghosts of his parents in Asakusa. To relive the affection of the past, he keeps visiting them, while his health deteriorates... On the other side, Harada's new girlfriend Axi seems to have an unknown past... "Ghostly Midsummer" is an award-winning novel from the 1988 Yamamoto Shuuichirou Prize, originally penned by renowned Japanese author Yamada Taichi, and adapted for the screen by the Nouvelle Vague director Nobuhiko Obayashi. The story is filled with a surreal atmosphere from the ghostly realm while brimming with touching emotions. It won third place in the "Kinema Junpo" annual top ten films, as well as best director and supporting actress awards at the 43rd Mainichi Film Awards, and best supporting actor and actress awards at the 31st Blue Ribbon Awards.
