Michael (Freddie Prinze Jr.) dreams of escaping his current class, making a name for himself, and breaking into high society. With his quick wit, he is fortunate enough to enroll in a pre-law program at Columbia University and encounters a rich girl named Ellen (Mena Suvari). Michael's aspirations for the future seem poised to become a reality. Bobby (Jerry Ferrara) is an honest man living a 9 to 5 life, and his only dream is to save enough money to marry the woman he loves. In contrast, Carmen (Scott Caan) is much bolder; filled with curiosity and admiration for the Brooklyn mob life, he quickly catches the attention of local boss Caesar (Alec Baldwin).
