During World War II, two women whose husbands were also drafted into the military became friends while working in a factory: Kay (Goldie Hawn) is a perfect housewife, while her neighbor Harlowe (Christine Lahti) is a fashionable beauty. The two women work the night shift from 3 PM to 11 PM at a factory that manufactures airplane parts. A coworker, Roger (Kurt Russell), falls in love with Kay at first sight and immediately pursues her; unable to resist, Kay eventually agrees to let Roger into her home—and into her bed. However, just as Kay, Roger, and Harlowe are celebrating Roger's birthday at a party, Kay's husband, Jack, unexpectedly returns home!
