An old man living deep in the mountains (voiced by Takeo Chii) goes into the forest to cut bamboo early one morning and discovers a tiny doll the size of his palm inside a glowing bamboo shoot. Overjoyed to have no children of his own, he cradles the doll and returns home, where the little one starts to grow larger in the hands of the old woman (voiced by Nobuko Miyamoto). As the years go by, the loving grandfather carefully raises his princess (voiced by Aki Asakura), who grows at an astonishing rate. She explores the countryside with the village children and meets the honest and reliable Shamaru (played by Kengo Kora). However, a mysterious song brings her to tears. The old man discovers gold and beautiful cloth in the mountains and is determined to give the princess a noble life, so the whole family moves to a mansion in the capital. The princess is extraordinary and beautiful, and from then on, the name "Kaguya-hime" becomes renowned among the nobles in the capital. However, the beautiful girl's smile gradually fades; this doesn't seem to be the life she yearned for... This film is adapted from the Japanese folk legend "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter."
