Curtis (played by Michael Shannon) is a construction worker who works hard to support his family. Fortunately, he has a harmonious relationship with his wife Samantha (played by Jessica Chastain) and they have a six-year-old deaf daughter, Hannah. One day, Curtis wakes up from a very vivid nightmare in which terrifying tornadoes arrive, raining down tar-like substances, and the entire town is flattened. From then on, similar nightmares occur frequently, and Curtis gradually begins to believe that these are apocalyptic visions, thinking that everything happening in the dream is being brought into reality. He starts to become irritable and withdrawn, even building a storm shelter at home, and eventually loses his job. Samantha does not understand her husband's series of changes, believing that he is ill and should see a psychologist. She becomes angry about spending a lot of money on useless things, buying expensive and pointless gas masks, and losing their health insurance due to his job loss. Curtis's "symptoms" become increasingly severe and less tolerable to those around him. His fate depends on whether the storm he foresees will actually come...
