In the summer of their childhood, a girl named Menma (voiced by Ai Kayano) dies in an accident. This sudden death deeply wounds her five childhood friends—Jinta, Anaru, Yukiatsu, Tsuruko, and Poppo. The secret base formed by the six, "Chō Heiwa Busters," disbands, and the five who remain grow apart, each carrying an irreparable trauma. Ten years later, Menma unexpectedly returns in a form that only Jinta can see, carrying a wish she wants to fulfill. This theatrical version begins after Menma has "reached enlightenment" with the help of her five friends. A year after Menma fulfills her wish and disappears, Jinta and the others reunite, each writing letters to Menma, reminiscing about the miracles that happened to the six of them in the summer of last year.
