In an American town, four-year-old Amanda suddenly goes missing. Her aunt and uncle hire private detective Patrick Kenzie (played by Casey Affleck) to investigate her disappearance. Patrick Kenzie and his girlfriend and partner Angela (played by Michelle Monaghan) begin a difficult investigation. As they delve deeper, they discover that Amanda’s mother, Helene, is a hardcore drug addict, seemingly more concerned about drugs than her daughter’s disappearance. The investigation shifts focus onto her, and soon drug dealers, scammers, and child abusers come to light. Detective Remy Broussard (played by Ed Harris) and Officer Jack Doyle (played by Morgan Freeman) also join the case, but Amanda's name grows increasingly distant. Patrick Kenzie finds himself at a moral crossroads, contemplating what it means to "seek justice."
