Tamaki Tsubaki (voiced by Yoshihiko Matsui) loses her mother to a severe illness, and no relatives are willing to take in this poor child. Thus, Tsubaki follows a gentleman in a hat whom she met while selling flowers to a circus called "Akinekiza." In this dilapidated and desolate circus, the performers are a group of "freaks" who are either disabled or peculiar. Here, Tsubaki tragically endures their humiliation and becomes a slave to the crowd, living a life of unbearable suffering. A new performer in the circus is a dwarf magician who can fit himself into a narrow glass bottle. His act becomes extremely popular and quickly saves the nearly bankrupt circus, turning it into a treasure trove for the owner. Meanwhile, an innocent romance develops between Tsubaki and the magician; however, just as they decide to be together, the magician meets with an unexpected fatal accident.
