In 1975, Northern Ireland suffered from the pain and trauma of violent riots perpetrated by the Ulster Volunteer Force against Catholic civilians. At just 17 years old, young Alistair (played by Liam Neeson) was swept up in the violent atmosphere and joined the Ulster Volunteer Force, brutally killing Joe Griffin's (played by James Nesbitt) brother in front of young Joe during a violent act against Catholic civilians. With the unrest subsiding, Alistair was sentenced to twelve years in prison, while Joe, who witnessed his brother's murder, lived under the burden of his mother's blame and his own guilt. Over thirty years later, a television station invites the grown-up Alistair and Joe to participate in a recording, attempting to uncover the truth of the events through an interview format and hoping for reconciliation between the two. How will Joe, who has been tormented for so long by the memory of his brother's killer, face Alistair? And how will Alistair recount the events to Joe? Will they find a way to reconcile, and how will this change their lives?
