In the 15th century, a grand festival celebration is taking place in a huge white castle. The devil sends forth his creations to mingle among the acrobats. In this beautifully crafted opening scene, the costumers, actors, and musicians are all entranced by French tradition, perfectly and accurately recreating the characters from ancient fine brushwork. After this opening scene, the world depicted by the writers and director remains unchanged under medieval attire. However, their arguments have shifted. The film portrays, on one hand, the good people, those made sacred by love — such as the poet and the young lady of the lord, and on the other hand, the evil individuals led by the devil himself, who here merges with fate. The film received the warmest welcome. Carné originally intended to set this mythological story in the contemporary era. Later, upon careful consideration, he shifted the time period to the superstitious medieval era, where devils and witchcraft thrived. In the playwright's mind, the devil represented Hitler. But this allusion is difficult to discern in the film. The devil uses sorcery to transform the lovers into stone statues, standing beside a fountain that reflects knights jousting, with evil prevailing. Yet that pair of lovers, chained and tormented, still recklessly comes together, their hearts constantly beating within the statues. It is evident that this embodies the imprisoned image of France, and in the films of Carné and Prévert, viewers see for the first time that fate and evil are powerless against love and goodness.
