The Yamada family, living in Yamanokuni City, consists of five members: the head of the family, Takane Yamada, who has reached his forties, works as a clerk in a small company's miscellaneous department. He is somewhat patriarchal and often argues with his wife over trivial matters, yet is subdued by his mother-in-law; his wife, Matsuko, is the same age as him and is a full-time housewife, busy managing the meals and daily life of the entire family, but is rather forgetful and often misplaces things; Matsuko's mother is nearing seventy but is still vigorous; this elderly lady is independent, speaks harshly, and is not afraid of even the toughest crowds; their eldest son, Asaka, is a somewhat ordinary-looking middle school student who has inherited his mother's forgetfulness and lives a life filled with amusing incidents; the youngest daughter, Noyoko, is in the third grade of elementary school, small and thin, often becomes the forgotten one among her quirky family. The ordinary Yamada household presents a daily life full of humor and joy. This film is adapted from the four-panel comic "Hoho Kekkyou: My Neighbor Yamada-kun" by Hisaichi Ishii.
