Born into a family of shamans, Maki Asakura (voiced by Yuko Satou) was taught by her grandfather to become a shaman from a young age. Shamans have the ability to communicate freely with gods, spirits, and even the deceased, and can use these powers to heal or destroy. This ability is highly desired by many. From her grandfather, Asakura learned that if she could stand out and win in the Shaman Fight, she would obtain the Spirit King and fulfill any wish she desired. Firmly believing that “the boat will naturally go straight when it reaches the bridge,” Asakura made a vow to pursue the path of the Shaman King. To find her own spirit, Asakura transferred to Takamagahara High School, where she met Manta Oyamada (voiced by Inuyama Inuko) and quickly became friends with him. She then encountered Ryu (voiced by Masahiko Tanaka), who also shared the ambition of becoming the Shaman King. Due to an unexpected incident, Asakura gained her spirit—a samurai named Amidamaru from 600 years ago (voiced by Katsuaki Kobayashi).
