Slam, roughly translated as "poetry slam," may be an unfamiliar term for many. It is an art movement that originated in 1986, when American poet Marc Smith aimed to bring poetry down from its elitist pedestal, making its reading more accessible and enjoyable. Thus, poetry slam was born. Creators of poetry slams do not need to adhere to a uniform meter; they simply express their observations and feelings about life using their preferred words and styles. This transcendence imbues poetry slam with a sense of freedom, openness, equality, and sharing. How do you enter this wild and poetic world? Director Marc Levin, in his work "Slam," approaches the theme through black street culture, gang culture, and rap culture (note: poetry slam is not rap, but a form that is freer than rap), telling a story of self-discovery and redemption through self-reflection and free expression. Through the lens, we will walk alongside the male protagonist through black neighborhoods, prisons, city streets, and poetry slam competitions, searching for truth in the face of fate, gradually approaching the authenticity of life and the inner self, and transforming it into a vibrant and sincere poetry slam. The performance form of poetry slam is extremely pure, without costumes, sets, or music; the entire process relies solely on the voice and body language of the poets. The stage, the poets, and the audience together create this simple, free, and primal space, to the extent that when the spirit of poetry slam penetrates deeply, even everyday conversations can transform into rhythmic poetry slams, showcasing the beautiful fluidity of language. As the film progresses, you will feel, in the final performance, the poets' self-exploration being as sincere and vulnerable as a naked infant, and their emotions surging wildly like massive waves on a deserted island. It is a complete expression of life, as simple as one, and one is the whole.
