The story takes place in a distant future world, where a group known as "Equals" has become the main productive force in society. Compared to ordinary humans, Equals are more perfect; they possess beautiful appearances, noble moral senses, stable emotions, and intelligent minds. However, this excessive perfection has caused Equals to lose human emotions. A disease known as SOS is the greatest destabilizing factor in this society. Those afflicted with SOS become sensitive, sad, impulsive, and depressed. Once residents are discovered to have SOS, they are exiled by the government and can never return to society. Silas (played by Nicholas Hoult) is an SOS patient. One day, he encounters a girl named Nia (played by Kristen Stewart). Although Nia appears cold and emotionless, she actually suffers from SOS as well; everything is merely a disguise.
