Soon it will be summer vacation. Elementary school student Koichi Uehara finds a large stone on his way home from school. He brings the stone home, and to his surprise, after washing it with water, a small kappa jumps out. The little kappa makes a "gu" sound, so Koichi names it "Little Gu." Little Gu can speak human language and has been buried underground for hundreds of years. Koichi quickly becomes good friends with Little Gu; they bathe, eat, and sleep together. Other family members also accept Little Gu, and the kappa becomes the Uehara family's secret. One day, Little Gu expresses a desire to go home and be with its friends. To help Little Gu understand the outside world, Koichi secretly takes it out. Little Gu discovers that the environment has changed dramatically and is shocked to find that there are no friends for kappa in this place unsuitable for their survival. Seeing Little Gu sad makes Koichi feel bad too. Together, they travel to Tono County, where the kappa legend is still preserved. In the beautiful nature, they find a suitable place for kappa to live, and Little Gu joyfully swims in the clear river, making Koichi happy. However, there are still no other kappa to be found. When Koichi hears villagers saying, "Catching a kappa can earn you ten million!", he quickly takes Little Gu away from there. Back home, Koichi is surprised to encounter a young reporter. It turns out the person has heard that the Uehara family has a kappa and wants to take a picture. Little Gu's secret is finally exposed to everyone. Koichi's father is ordered by his company to put the kappa on television. For the sake of the Uehara family, Little Gu agrees to participate in the TV show. However, among the guests, it sees a person who looks very much like the murderer of its father. Just as Little Gu is surrounded by fear, an accident occurs at the TV show site. It desperately escapes outside, but no matter where it runs, it sees crowds of people. To escape from the humans that scare it, Little Gu climbs Tokyo Tower. The summer sun exhausts it. Little Gu looks down at the city and whispers to itself, "I can't find a quiet place anywhere. This is a nest of humans. I'm done. I want to go to my dad..."
