Dule (played by Samuel L. Jackson) is a struggling African American salesman who fights hard to secure a mortgage in order to gain custody of his child. At an alcoholics' sharing session, he, a teetotaler, cannot hide his joy and speaks passionately. Kevin (played by Ben Affleck) is a white lawyer at an art foundation who once helped a wealthy individual with charitable donations. However, after the elder's death, he is instructed by his boss to systematically oust the foundation's old members, an act seen by the elder's heir as betrayal, leading to a lawsuit against him.At this moment, a car accident brings Dule and Kevin together. Due to mixing up each other's documents, their fates change. Dule misses the deadline for a meeting, resulting in his child being awarded to his wife for custody, making it rare for father and son to meet. Meanwhile, Kevin finds himself cornered in court and trapped in a crisis of trust.
