14 years ago, the awakening of the First Unit, suspected of achieving a divine first form, led to the Third Impact, causing unprecedented changes in the world. After that, Misato Katsuragi (voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi) and other former members of NERV left to form Wille, a resistance against Seele and NERV. Wille assigns Asuka Langley Shikinami (voiced by Yuko Miyamura) and Mari Makinami Illustrious (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto) to retrieve the First Unit and Shinji Ikari (voiced by Megumi Ogata), who is sealed in a satellite orbit, but absolutely forbids Shinji from piloting the First Unit. Sensing the surrounding hostility, a confused Shinji follows Rei Ayanami (voiced by Megumi Hayashibara) onto the suddenly invading Unit 09 and returns to the damaged NERV headquarters. Here, he unexpectedly reunites with Rei, whom he has longed for, and learns from his father that he will pilot Unit 13 together with the beautiful boy Kaworu Nagisa (voiced by Akira Ishida). The 14-year blank period, along with the immense changes and emotional entanglements during that time, leaves Shinji at a loss.
