Twenty years ago, the kind and warm-hearted Haru Kawashima (played by Sayuri Yoshinaga) and her husband Yukinobu (played by Kyohei Shibata) arrived on a cold, remote island in Hokkaido. Haru became the teacher of the only six students at the local elementary school and discovered their singing talents. However, a tragic accident claimed Yukinobu's life, and after being criticized by the villagers, Haru quietly left the island. Fast forward to the present, recently retired Haru receives a visit from two detectives, realizing that one of the six young boys from back then—Nobuto Suzuki (played by Mirai Moriyama)—is involved in a murder case. With many questions in her heart, Haru returns to the long-abandoned island and visits her former students: Mana Hoda (played by Hikaru Mitsushima), Naoki Ikushima (played by Ryo Katsuji), Yuka Ando (played by Aoi Miyazaki), Naoe Fujimoto (played by Eiko Koike), and Isamu Matsuda (played by Ryuhei Matsuda). The events from that time left an indelible shadow in their hearts. Will this reunion be able to unlock the emotional knots between teacher and students? This film is adapted from the short story "Twenty Years Later Homework" from Kanae Minato's collection "Correspondence (往復書簡)."
