Cleopatra, a frightened girl hiding in the shadow of the Sphinx, encounters Caesar from Rome, heralding the arrival of a new era in Egypt and foreshadowing the birth of its queen. At this time, Cleopatra is still an innocent and lovely girl, beautiful and enticing but with a temperamental and capricious character, dreaming of a strong and handsome man to protect her and ascend to the throne. Shaw, from a very different perspective, portrays Caesar not as the legendary aggressive warrior, but as a wise, kind, witty, and generous monarch, weary of bloodshed and betrayal, yearning for a joyous life.
