This film is based on true events. Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones) suddenly receives news that his son, Army infantryman Mike Deerfield (Jonathan Tucker), has gone missing after returning home from Iraq. Veteran Hank drives to the military base to investigate personally and learns bit by bit about the psychological trauma Mike experienced in Iraq through images from his son's phone. Soon, the police discover that Mike has been murdered and dismembered. Hank's wife, Joan (Susan Sarandon), is devastated upon hearing the tragic news and is inconsolable. During the investigation, Hank meets local agent Emily (Charlize Theron), and the two develop a special friendship as they gradually get closer to uncovering the truth behind the incident. This film received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor (Tommy Lee Jones) and won the Catholic Culture Award at the 64th Venice Film Festival, along with a nomination for the Golden Lion.
