The once peaceful island of Swallow Falls is destroyed by the genius invention of the refoodinator created by Flint Lockwood (voiced by Bill Hader). Eventually, he successfully dismantles the refoodinator and plans to rebuild a wonderful home with Sam (voiced by Anna Faris) and the others. At that moment, Flint's idol—Chester V, the head of Live Corp (voiced by Will Forte)—descends from the sky. Chester is a genius inventor, and his company gathers the world's top scientists. Chester invites Flint to join Live Corp and promises to take the islanders to California, with his company handling the cleanup of the devastated island. In order to become a fantastical inventor, Flint gives his all to the research and development. Meanwhile, troubling news comes from home. Many cleaners are captured by living food, suggesting that the refoodinator was not completely destroyed, and it continues to evolve in ways Flint never anticipated. Under Chester's orders, Flint, Sam, his dad, and other friends embark on a journey back home to find a solution to the problem...
