The story takes place in England in 1552, with an impending power transition causing the nobles to feel threatened. Under the covert manipulation of the Duke of Somerset, John Dudley (played by John Wood), the original heir, the Catholic Princess Mary (played by Jane Lapotaire), is sidelined, and Jane (played by Helena Bonham Carter) becomes the successor. Subsequently, Duke John arranges for his son Guildford (played by Cary Elwes) to marry Jane, thus consolidating power in his hands. Jane and Guildford are sent to the countryside awaiting their coronation, and the initially unfamiliar pair slowly develops a genuine affection for one another. After the death of Edward VI (played by Warren Saire), 16-year-old Jane wields significant power, but some of her actions annoy the ministers, leading to her overthrow after only nine days as queen. Meanwhile, Princess Mary, who has fled abroad, returns to England with an army to reclaim what is rightfully hers.
