Young-min (played by Kim Song) is mischievous but still somewhat sensible. Every day after school, he sells ice cream to earn money to buy sunglasses for his mother, who suffers from an eye disease. Eventually, his mother discovers his secret, and he endures tears of grievance as he lets her scold and hit him. Coming from a poor background, he is often bullied by his classmates, and his experiences have made him more mature than children his age. A girl named Yu-ryeon (played by Lee Se-young) transfers from Seoul to Young-min's class, and this delicate girl actively tries to befriend him. However, when Yu-ryeon reads a love letter Young-min wrote to the teacher, he is scolded by her. Being a child, he responds by drawing a line on the table to indicate that he no longer wants to associate with Yu-ryeon. Once, Young-min bravely saves Yu-ryeon from drowning, and learns about the story behind her circumstances. From then on, the two children from completely different backgrounds become friends.
