Directed by Yasujirō Ozu, this is his twenty-seventh film, shot in just nine days, and it combines various filming techniques of Ozu. Elements such as the typical low angles and close-ups are present in this work. On the surface, it appears to be a popular new-style drama theme of the time—women sacrificing themselves for men—however, it actually alludes to a very taboo topic: the female lead, Chikako, is actually involved in an underground organization. Due to the taboo nature of this topic, it could not be too overtly portrayed during its performance. Made in 1933, this black-and-white silent film has a runtime of forty-seven minutes.
