Vincent (played by Robert Sheehan) is a patient with Tourette syndrome. After the death of his mother, Vincent's estranged father appears and sends him to a treatment center, where he is placed under the care of Dr. Ross (played by Kyra Sedgwick). In the treatment center, Vincent befriends Alex (played by Dev Patel), who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Mary (played by Zoe Kravitz), who is an anorexia patient. The three young patients form a close friendship, and one day they steal Dr. Ross's car and drive to the beach to mourn Vincent's mother. Upon discovering Vincent and his friends’ "escape," Dr. Ross and Vincent's father team up to "hunt" the three "fugitives."
