The music prodigy Chopin, filled with talent and passion for music, lives during a tumultuous period of war, with his homeland Poland being invaded by the Tsarist Russia. His music teacher tirelessly urges him to go to Paris to develop his career. As an adult, Chopin (played by Cornel Wilde) increasingly radiates a spirit of patriotism, secretly attending revolutionary meetings and publicly refusing to perform for the Tsar, putting himself and his loved ones in danger, and forcing him to flee to Paris overnight. In the dazzling artistic realm, Chopin encounters the strong-willed writer George Sand (played by Merle Oberon) and is deeply attracted to her. However, George Sand’s love becomes more possessive; she cuts off Chopin's ties with his past and confines him indoors to compose music all day, allowing him only to perform at noble salons and forbidding public ticketed concerts. Isolated in their love and musical space, Chopin's pneumonia worsens, while back in Poland, his friends and family are all captured in a recent resistance movement, urgently needing ransom. Weak and frail, Chopin sees that his only way to raise money is to risk his life by holding a concert, torn between his lover’s strong opposition, the safety of his fellow countrymen, and his own deteriorating health with the black and white piano keys before him. How will the young Chopin choose...? This film has received multiple nominations for Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Music, and Best Original Screenplay.
