In the vast expanse of the American West, wild stallion Spirit and his herd live a peaceful life. However, when Spirit encounters humans for the first time, he is captured and trained to be a war horse. Luckily, a kind-hearted young Indian boy named Little Creek rescues Spirit from the training camp and brings him back to his tribe. In Little Creek's tribe, Spirit meets a painted mare named Rain. This time, Spirit finds it hard to choose between returning home or staying, as he has fallen deeply in love with Rain. Little Creek notices the love between the two horses and decides to help them return to Spirit's homeland together. Just as Spirit is reluctantly saying goodbye to Little Creek, the tribe is attacked by cavalry. Spirit and Rain rush back to save Little Creek, and in the chaos, Rain takes a bullet meant for him, while Spirit is captured again…
