Set against the backdrop of Sicily in 1860, the film reflects the inevitable fate of the declining old aristocracy in the face of a new era's arrival and the sweeping changes in society, as experienced through the inner journey of Prince Salina. Initially, the Salina family lives a tranquil life. However, as the situation changes drastically, the prince's nephew Tancredi joins Giuseppe Garibaldi's forces landing in Sicily. Upon returning home, Tancredi falls in love with Angelica, the daughter of Mayor Sedara, and they soon become engaged. Sedara promises a lavish dowry for his daughter, thereby saving the declining Salina family, while he takes pride in allying with high nobility. Subsequently, a popular vote in Sicily overwhelmingly favors the unification with Italy. Turin sends envoys inviting Salina to represent the nobility in parliamentary work, but Salina declines. The new government brings no changes to the island that has slumbered for over two thousand years. Particularly after Garibaldi's defeat, the social life of Palermo’s elite returns to its former state, with nobles frequently holding balls, celebrating their survival.
