Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) is an extremely rare blue macaw in the world. As a chick, he was captured by despicable poachers from the tropical jungle of Rio and taken to the United States. By a twist of fate, he becomes the pet of a little girl named Linda and has been with her for many years. Now, Blu is like a pampered homebody, having even forgotten how to fly. One day, an ornithologist named Tulio (voiced by Rodrigo Santoro) visits Linda's (voiced by Leslie Mann) bookstore and is astonished by Blu, hoping to take him back to Rio to mate with the only other remaining female of his species. Although apprehensive, Linda decides to take Blu to Rio, considering the fate of the blue macaw. Blu successfully meets the beautiful female macaw, Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway), who is determined to escape captivity and return to nature.
