In 19th century Flanders, Belgium. One day, a nun visits the cathedral in Antwerp. As she gazes up at Rubens' "The Assumption of the Virgin," her memories suddenly drift back 20 years... Nello (voiced by Brady Bluhm) is an orphan living with his grandfather (voiced by Robert Loggia) in the village of Hoboken near Antwerp, making a living by delivering milk. By chance, they adopt a large dog named Patrasche that has been abandoned. Nello and his grandfather live a poor life, and Patrasche does everything he can to help them, pulling their cart into town to sell milk. Although Nello is poor, he possesses astonishing artistic talent and harbors a noble dream, striving tirelessly to realize it. However, misfortunes follow him relentlessly: Nello is forced to distance himself from his childhood friend Alois (voiced by Debi Derryberry) due to their economic differences, and his youthful dreams are put on hold; when everyone else abandons him, only the old dog Patrasche remains by his side... The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by British author Ouida.
