After the end of World War II, the once metropolitan Tokyo lay in ruins, desolate and bleak. In the Long House Street, where the impoverished gathered, those who managed to survive worked tirelessly to rebuild their lives, united in their longing for a better future. One day, Tanida brought back a boy named Kohei (played by Aoki Hōhi). Kohei's parents were both killed in the war, leaving him alone and destitute. Although kind-hearted people sympathized with Kohei's plight, they struggled to make ends meet themselves, let alone take on another mouth to feed. After much consideration, Tanida decided to entrust Kohei to the shop owner, Akin (played by Iida Chōko). However, Akin, burdened by her own painful experiences, initially expressed rejection and disdain towards the child. As time passes, however, her deep-seated maternal tenderness gradually awakens… This film is Yasujiro Ozu's first work after the end of World War II.
