Gru, the supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell), is displeased with the rise of new thieves after hearing news of the theft of the Egyptian pyramids. He decides to build a rocket to steal the moon with the help of Dr. Nefario (voiced by Russell Brand). During the process of taking out a loan from the Bank of Evil, Gru's shrink ray is stolen by the new thief, Vector (voiced by Jason Segel). To get back the shrink ray, Gru decides to adopt three orphans—Margo (voiced by Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (voiced by Dana Gaier), and Agnes (voiced by Elsie Fisher)—and uses them as an opportunity to sneak into Vector's fortress by selling cookies. After the plan succeeds, he intends to dispose of the three kids quietly. However, during the ordinary daily interactions, Gru finds he can't bear to part with these three little girls, but such emotional attachment seriously affects his meticulously planned moon theft...
