Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan) lives with his girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz) and their four-year-old daughter in Oakland. On December 31, 2008, it is Oscar's mother's birthday. In the morning, he takes his daughter to preschool and drops his girlfriend off at work as usual. Oscar has sold marijuana, served time in jail, and has been fired for being late often, but he plans to start a new life with the new year approaching. In the evening, the family gathers to celebrate both his mother's birthday and the arrival of the new year. After the family gathering, Oscar takes Sophina and a group of friends on the subway to San Francisco to see the fireworks.
