In a refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan, Afghan teenager Jamal struggles to survive alongside tens of thousands of his compatriots amidst extremely limited international aid and meager wages. Many refugees attempt to smuggle themselves into Europe to improve their lives. Jamal’s cousin is planning to go to London, UK, to seek a livelihood, and after paying a considerable sum to a smuggler, he brings Jamal along because Jamal speaks some English. The two travel by land through Iran and Turkey, experiencing detention by Iranian police, working to raise travel expenses, and hiding in a fruit transport vehicle... They finally board a cargo ship heading to Europe, but the long journey claims the lives of Jamal’s cousin and others, leaving Jamal to navigate the unfamiliar European continent alone... This film aims to create a realistic atmosphere of documentary filmmaking, with all characters portrayed by actual refugees. It won the Golden Bear at the 2003 Berlin International Film Festival and several other accolades.
