The story takes place shortly after the end of the American Civil War. Captain Kidd (played by Tom Hanks), a former officer who bravely fought on the front lines, has now become a newsreader. He travels from town to town, bringing the latest news from around the world to the residents living there. One day, Kidd encounters a young girl named Johanna (played by Helena Zengel) in Texas. This unfortunate girl was kidnapped and raised by Native Americans six years ago, and now, having regained her freedom, she is on her way to live with her uncle and aunt, although this is not what Johanna truly wants. A unique bond forms between Kidd and Johanna, leading Kidd to promise to escort her to where she belongs. Together, they must face not only the treacherous natural environment but also the unpredictable hearts of men.
