Otonashi Yuzuru (voiced by Hiroshi Kamiyama) arrives in the afterlife after dying. Upon waking up in a school, he meets a girl named Nakahara Yuri (voiced by Hiromi Sakurai) who invites him to join the "Afterlife Battlefront," abbreviated as SSS. Their mission is to fight against their enemy—the representative of God, the student council president Kanade Tachibana (voiced by Kana Hanazawa). Yuri is the leader of this front; as long as they resist Kanade, they can continue to exist, and by defeating her, they can obtain the world. Since Yuzuru hasn't regained his memories, he reluctantly agrees to join their organization, but soon discovers that Kanade is invulnerable, as they are all unable to be harmed or die.
