In the year 2199, the enemy Gamilas Empire from outside the solar system begins to invade other planets to save their home planet from crisis. The Earth forces suffer a devastating defeat in their battles against the Gamilas military, while the Gamilas launch numerous radiation-laden planetary bombs at Earth. The resistance on Earth grows weaker. In a gesture of goodwill, Iscandar, a twin planet of Gamilas, sends blueprints for the wave motion engine and wave motion gun to Earth and informs the Earth forces that their planet has a radiation-clearing device called "Cosmic Cleaning Device D." With comms lost to Europe and America, the Earth's defense forces use the technology provided by Iscandar to transform the Yamato, which is sleeping on the ocean floor, into a battleship. The entire crew of Yamato embarks on a long journey to retrieve the "Cosmic Cleaning Device D."
