Brian (Mark Ruffalo) and Paulie (Ethan Hawke) are two childhood friends who, in the crisis-laden Boston, can only rely on their own meager strength to struggle in this brutal world. As they grow older, their petty mischief turns into real crime. After joining a smuggling gang led by Pat Kelly (Brian Goodman), the brothers gradually walk down different paths. During a drug deal, they end up in prison, where Brian begins to reflect on his actions over the years. No longer willing to live a life of desperation, he decides to turn over a new leaf and strives for an honest, peaceful life with his wife and child. However, society is unforgiving, and left with no options, Brian reluctantly partners with Paulie again to commit robberies.
