The story tells of a mixed-race girl, Belle, who is adopted by an aristocratic family and influences the abolition of slavery. The protagonist Belle is the illegitimate daughter of British naval officer John Lindsay and a Caribbean slave, later adopted by her father's uncle, Lord Mansfield. Although she grows up in an aristocratic household, her dark skin constantly reminds her of her origins. She uses her strength to advocate for the abolition of slavery alongside Lord Mansfield.
