Jennifer (Laura Dern) is a documentary filmmaker creating a documentary about the lives of women around the world. One day, Jennifer unexpectedly receives a call from her mother, Knight (Ellen Burstyn), who tells her that she has found Jennifer's diary from when she was 13, which records the time she spent at summer camp with her riding coach, Mrs. G (Elizabeth Debicki), and her running coach, Bill (Jason Ritter).
Jennifer's naïve entries reveal some unsettling truths that deeply disturb Knight. Encouraged by Knight and her fiancé, Martin (Common), Jennifer decides to locate Mrs. G and Bill to inquire about what really happened back then. Little does she know that this action will unlock a Pandora's box of memories that Jennifer had tightly locked away.
