Nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg) witnesses a murder and is pursued by a mob boss. To escape the killer, she seeks help from the police, who arrange for her to hide in the safest place in the world— a convent. The quiet and secluded life of the convent is hard for the active Deloris to endure, so she sneaks out at night to sing and dance. The Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) worries for her safety and places her in the choir, but Deloris finds the choir to be terrible and decides to make changes. During Mass, the choir unexpectedly sings popular songs with lyrics changed to praise the Lord. This new twist is met with enthusiasm from the congregation and even attracts the attention of the Pope. However, when the news hits television, Deloris realizes she must once again go on the run.
