The delinquent boy Yusuke Urameshi from Sarayashiki Junior High spends his days doing nothing, either bickering with his childhood friend Keiko Yukimura or taking out his frustrations on his rival Kazuma Kuwabara. One day, while skipping class and playing around, Yusuke saves a little girl from being hit by a car, only to be killed himself. His actions surprise the spirit world, granting him a chance to be resurrected. With help from Keiko and Kuwabara, Yusuke ultimately returns to the human world after facing several trials. Subsequently, he becomes a spirit detective, specializing in various unusual criminal cases. During one mission, Yusuke meets the fox spirit Kurama, who goes by the alias Shuuichi Minamino, and the thief Hiei. As fate would have it, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei become partners through their shared experiences. Together, they participate in the Dark Martial Arts Tournament, which gathers powerful demons, facing off against the terrifying Toguro Brothers. This marks the beginning of their deepening entanglements with the demon world and increasingly intense battles…
